Hichem – Leading and Optimizing

One of the strengths of the Professional Fellows Program (PFP) is what happens when Fellows bring their professional expertise to U.S. organizations—and then carry new ideas, approaches, and relationships home.

This spring, Algerian Professional Fellow Hichem Zorgani completed his U.S. fellowship with DC Central Kitchen, where he worked alongside the Culinary Job Training team. During his placement, Hichem applied his experience in operations and entrepreneurship to help examine processes, identify efficiencies, reduce costs, and explore ways staff time could be focused more directly on supporting Culinary Job Training participants.

For Hichem, the experience was also an opportunity to learn from an organization that combines strong operational systems with a clear community mission.

That exchange of expertise continued after his return to Algeria.

Working with ElDjazair Up, the Bechar Business Incubator, the Directorate of Tourism and Handicrafts, and other partners, Hichem recently helped deliver a three-day entrepreneurship initiative bringing young project leaders from Bechar to Algiers.

Working with local organizations and institutions, the program tackled the real-world questions entrepreneurs face. The program moved beyond entrepreneurship theory to address the practical challenges of bringing a business to market: pricing and profitability, customer acquisition and retention, go-to-market strategy, performance tracking, and building operational systems for growth. Participants also practiced real-world scenarios involving customers, partners, funders, government administration, and suppliers.

This is professional exchange in action: sharing expertise in the United States, learning from American colleagues and institutions, and adapting that experience to create practical opportunities at home.

Congratulations to Hichem, DC Central Kitchen, and the many Algerian partners and young entrepreneurs who contributed to this continuing exchange of knowledge and ideas.
