Global Change, Local Solutions by Levi, ODYLP Uganda Alum

Meet Levi, an ODYLP alum from Uganda who participated in ODYLP: Climate Adaptation and Resilience in 2023. In this post, Levi shares how his ODYLP experience not only equipped him with valuable skills but also guided his current educational pursuits. He reflects on the meaningful cross-cultural relationships and mentorships he formed, and how this transformative journey has fueled his passion for making a positive difference in the world!

Participating in the On-Demand Youth Leadership Program (ODYLP) in 2023 was nothing short of transformative for me. The theme of “Climate Adaptation and Resilience” opened my eyes to new ideas and connected me with incredible peers from diverse backgrounds who share my passion for making a difference. Reflecting on my time in the ODYLP, I realize how it has shaped my aspirations and commitment to making a difference. The skills and insights I gained continue to influence my studies and my approach to challenges, reinforcing my desire to contribute positively to my community. The friendships I forged with fellow participants, my welcoming host family, and the supportive program organizers created an inspiring network that I still lean on today.

How did ODYLP help me make a positive impact in my community?

Weeks after the ODYLP concluded, I helped establish and served as vice president of the Young Environmental Volunteering Association, a community project initiated by Team Uganda. This initiative aimed to rally secondary school students to tackle urgent environmental challenges and promote sustainable practices. We made real strides, launching environmental clubs in 12 schools across the Kween district, where students are now actively engaged in weekly clean-up initiatives. This project not only gave me hands-on experience in community organizing but also reinforced my belief in the power of grassroots efforts to address the genuine needs of our communities. I learned firsthand that teamwork, resilience, and the spirit of collective action can truly lead to meaningful change.

How did ODYLP inspire my current educational journey?

Now, I’m diving into my Computer Science major with a minor in Environmental Studies at Stetson University in Florida, driven by the goal of harnessing technology to create innovative solutions for combating climate change. I’m eager to join committees that influence UN General Assemblies, advocating for policies that prioritize environmental action. The strong bonds I developed with fellow participants, experts, and mentors during my time in the U.S. were instrumental in shaping my academic journey. Their guidance continues to inspire me as I navigate my studies and work towards a future devoted to environmental sustainability.

What skills and insights did I gain from ODYLP?

Looking back on my ODYLP experience, I’m incredibly thankful for the skills and insights I gained. The program helped me build better communication skills, networking abilities, adaptability, and resilience—qualities that have laid a solid foundation for my education here in the U.S. I’m excited to channel the knowledge and experiences I gained to spark positive change in my community.

I also want to give a special shoutout to my host family, especially my host brother, Max. He’s been like a true brother and friend since I first arrived in their home, and he continues to be a shoulder to lean on as I adjust to life in Florida.

As I move forward after ODYLP, I want to share a lesson that resonates deeply with me: “Remember, change is a journey, not a destination. Every step, no matter how small, brings us closer to our goals.”
